MONCKS CORNER, S.C.---The Berkeley County Foundation for Education is the recipient of a $10,000 grant recently awarded by Trident Health System.

"Trident has always been a good corporate citizen and a big supporter of public education in Berkeley County," said Foundation Chairman John West. "This is just another example of their commitment and it is very much appreciated. We are proud to have Trident as an ally."

West said receiving corporate donations furthers the Foundation's long-range mission of being a credible and financially strong contributor to the improvement of public education in Berkeley County.

"Trident Health System is pleased to be a part of the Foundation's initiative to provide Berkeley County educators with the tools they need to improve public education," siad Ann Edlund, director of the Moncks Corner Medical Center, a facility of Trident Health System.

The Trident grant will be used to help fund education improvement initiatives in Berkeley County including mini-grants that go directly to aid classroom teachers. The Foundation has a program of awarding $500 mini-grants in the spring and fall of each year. Projects include math, reading, science and practical business skills themes at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

"We are a county-wide Foundation and students throughout the district are benefiting from this approach," West said. "We are currently reviewing applications for the next round of mini-grants, which will be announced soon."

West also said the Foundation is sponsoring a district wide essay contest on the subject of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and how America is stronger. Award winners will be given U.S. Savings Bonds.

"We want to make sure students are directly rewarded for their hard work," said West.

The Foundation is a Moncks Corner-based non-profit organization founded two years ago by concerned citizens to raise, receive manage and disperse monies in support of public education in Berkeley County.

In June 2001, the Foundation hosted a successful fund-raiser at the Old Santee Canal Park in Moncks Corner with University of South Carolina head football coach Lou Holtz as guest speaker.

Trident Health System operates the Moncks Corner Medical Center, which opened last year and also operates the Trident Medical Center in North Charleston.
